The old saying goes that “nothing in life is certain except death and taxes.” For Lawrence County property owners, the deadline for one of those certainties is getting closer.
The deadline for paying the 2007 first-half property taxes is Friday.
“As of last week, we were at $3.9 million (taxes collected) so we’re pretty much on target with what we’ve done in the past,” Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Dale Burcham said.
“Of course the final week is really the big push. Mortgage companies, and places like Lowe’s and Wal-Mart tend to send their payments in during the last week.”
The second-half tax collections will be due July 20, tentatively. Tax bills on mobile homes will be mailed this week and will be due March 31, Burcham said.
Taxpayers will soon have a few more options for paying. Burcham said, by the end of March, a program should be in place to allow taxpayers to escrow their tax payments through the treasurer’s office.
“We’ve had a number of people express an interest in this,” he said. “We’ve got elderly people who no longer have a mortgage and they’re looking at it from that standpoint and there are young couples who do not have their taxes escrowed through their mortgage and they’re interested in it.”
By May, the treasurer’s office’s Web site should be operational. Area residents will be able to get information about the treasurer’s office and download various forms and set up escrow payments via the Internet.
Burcham said he soon hopes to be able to offer the option of paying tax bills online.
